2019 Mayne Island Eelgrass Survey

This year's survey was July 13 to 14 in Gallagher Bay. It was our fourth time surveying this particular bay since 2009. We had only five divers this time around but the great visibility this year more than made up for our small numbers.

Working in three teams, we were able to cover almost all of Gallagher Bay and most of a large spur between Gallagher Bay and Piggott Bay in the first day ...

2018 Mayne Island Eelgrass Survey

This was the Vanapneist Club's 10th year of doing eelgrass surveys on Mayne Island. It was also our third year of mapping Horton Bay, one of three bays we survey in a three-bay cycle.

As usual, the weather was fantastic but unfortunately, the visibility was not. Heavy rains in BC's interior had increased runoff from the Fraser River to surround Mayne Island, reducing visibility to less than a metre. It slowed us down ...

2017 Mayne Island Eelgrass Survey

On the weekend of June 3-4, members of the Vancouver Apneist Freediving Club participated in the 9th annual eelgrass survey on Mayne Island. This was our fourth in Miners Bay, part of a three year rotation with two other bays on the island.

These surveys are organized by the Mayne Island Conservancy and are used to monitor the size and health of the eelgrass beds. Eelgrass is important habitat for a variety of marine life ...

January 2017 Update

It has been a long time since the Vancouver Apneist site has seen an update but worry not! We are still active as a club; we just haven't been keeping the website up to date. Part of that was due to the fact that the site became difficult to maintain. We've given it a rebuild now and a fresh coat of paint so hopefully you will see more life here.

Two other excuses ...

A winter dive at Porteau Cove

One available and brave taker to our invitation to dive Porteau Cove on Sunday Jan. 26, 2014 - Jaap - who self-identified as 'novice' but that certainly didn't apply to his spirit...or to what I saw in his diving either. So it was me, Jayne, and Jaap on one of the nicest winter days (=blue sky, no wind). Both sea and air seemed to be around 6 or 7C. Visibility was great. Diving without waves ...
